Volunteers take on the 3-Peaks Challenge!!
On September 16th, two of our dedicated Scout leaders – Ryan(Louie) and Stephen(Baloo) are taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge: climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon – the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales – all within 24 hours!
They are doing this to raise vital funds for 1st Westgate-on-Sea Scout Group, helping to provide new equipment, improve facilities, and create more opportunities for local young people to experience the adventure of Scouting.
It’s a huge physical and mental challenge, espeacially as unfortunately they lost their 3rd team member Matt due to an injury just 17 days before, but they are doing it because they believe in the power of scouting to change lives.
They have done continous training and multiple practice walks carrying backpacks full of equipment they may need to replicate what they’ll carry during the challenge and walking to work in their walking boots to break them in.
Every donation, no matter how small, helps us get one step closer to our goal so please sponsor us and support your local Scouts!

Meet the team:
Ryan:
My name is Ryan, but alot of people may know me as Louie. I have been a member of 1st Westgate-On-Sea Scout Group for about 16 years now, starting as a beaver and staying with the group all through my scouting journey and now an adult leader.
I have always had such a passion for scouting for as long as i can remember, mainly due to alot of my family also being members of the scouting family. I absolutely love voulentering at 1st Westgate, with cubs, and often helping out across other sections too. Scouting has without a doubt helped shape me as the person I am today and I am forever grateful for everyone I have had the opportuinty to work along side of.
This 3 peaks challenge is a tough one but an absolute joy in my eyes. This challenge is pushing me to strive for a higher goal in my personal fitness as well as mental. I am thoroughly looking forward to the 3 peaks with the amazing team of volunteers that are taking part which include not only myself and Stephen, but also the others working hard to help, such as Peter (Skip) who is our designated driver for the challenge, and Kelsey (TicTac) who will be running our media pages. I hope to do 1st Westgate proud and raise a good amout of money that will go directly to the group to give our young people the best scouting experiences possible.
Stephen:
I (Stephen/Baloo) have been volunteering at 1st Westgate Cubs since 2019. I have seen how being involved in Scouting through all age groups can help children (and adults) grow and develop.
Having not been involved in Scouting myself as a child, I have learned a lot and developed skills I would otherwise not have during my time volunteering at 1st Westgate.
Outside of Scouting I have taken part in several half-marathons, a cake halfmarathon (eating some cake at the end of each mile), an orienteering half-marathon and have raced a train through Welsh mountains but am looking forward to this new challenge to raise money for 1st Westgate by climbing the 3 Peaks.
The money raised by completing the challenge will allow us to provide even more support and learning for everyone who is involved in Scouting at 1st Westgate.
All of the team have been working hard behind the scenes in order to make this mission a success, including sorting travel arrangements, timings, accommidation, food and drink. Now all thats left is to climb the peaks!
Lets do this – for 1st Westgate!
