An Allotment Adventure – Squirrel Scouts visit Lymington Allotment
1st Westgate on Sea Squirrels were excited to head out into the open air on a mini adventure!
On Thursday 16th May, Squirrel Scouts from 1st Westgate had a brilliant opportunity to learn a little about where food comes from with a visit to the Lymington Road Allotment. Working towards their ‘Let it Grow’ badge and their ‘Super Chef’ badge, the Squirrels were super excited to visit somewhere new, enthusiastic with wanting to learn about nature and the world around them, and eager to help.
On arrival, the Squirrels were taught about how to be safe and where they could/couldn’t go during their visit (we can confirm they were extremely well-behaved and did 1st Westgate proud!). This was then followed by a short walk up the track, heading to the Community Allotment. Whilst at the allotment the Squirrels had the chance to see plants growing (learning about how things appear at different stages before the food arrives on a plate), a chance to spend time working out which plants produced what fruit/veg, to water some plants, and an opportunity to hunt for bugs. As well as this the Squirrels had a chance to plant some seeds and to make mini bug hotels (the bug hotels are now living on the allotment site – Hawkeye and Sunshine will keep an eye on them and see if bugs like their new homes!).
All the Squirrels had a brilliant time at the Allotment and were super excited to get the chance to take home a couple of seeds they had planted themselves – the leaders can’t wait to hear how they are growing over the next few weeks!
Visits like this are only possible thanks to the great support of our awesome adults and young leaders – special thanks to all the Squirrel leaders (Chip, Storm, Rainbow, and Sunshine), to the Beaver leaders who supported (Bubbles and Hawkeye), to Squirrel young leader (Lilly), and also to the 1st Westgate Scouts who came along to support our Squirrels on their mini adventure (Lilly and Ben).
Special thanks also to the Westgate on Sea Lymington Road Allotment Association for allowing our Scouts the opportunity to visit the community allotment site – your support was appreciated in making this possible.
1st Westgate-on-Sea supports young people from the ages of 4-14 and is run completely by volunteers. If you would like to support young people, offering them (and you!) the chance to learn Skills4Life, and even make new friends yourself, then volunteering at 1st Westgate-on-Sea Scout Group could be the place for you!
